My high school sweetheart (the only boy I had ever been with) and I became pregnant at 20 years old. After 7 years together and a ring on my finger with promises of marriage after we finished college, I fully expected him to be in our lives forever. When he found out I was pregnant he started acting weird. I contemplated adoption and abortion briefly, but I knew from the time I saw the little red positive line that I was going to keep my child. Soon after my daughter was born he disappeared, literally...to another country. He couldn't handle the responsibility of being a father and the thought of raising a physically disabled child.

My story is one of determination and hope. I worked full-time, went to school full-time, and took advantage of every federal program I was eligible for. I stood in welfare lines and used food stamps. I did whatever was necessary. After so many struggles, I met William when my daughter was not even a year old. With my mother and him backing me, I graduated college and I now am a Calculus teacher.

I might have eaten dirt to be where I am now, but it was all worth it. When the times get tough, when you are exhausted, and working your 15th hour during the night shift, think about your child. I can afford now to give my daughter an even better life than I had. What more can I ask? At 26, William and I are expecting our second blessing, our first child together.
