I was a freshman at Drake University and I felt that I had finally found happiness. I had a group of friends that supported and loved me, no matter what happened. I began to date an old friend of mine from high school, back in Indiana. Within 2 months of dating, I found myself pregnant. I can remember the shock and horror of looking at the test and not believing it! I remember telling my boyfriend. He just hugged me and said we'd get through it. While we attempted to deal with the situation together, we were both in a state of mind that was not conducive to working things out. We separated at my suggestion, so that we could deal with the issue separately and collectively reconfigure our situation later. I really didn't know if our relationship would happen again, but I was determined to have my child.

My parents were shocked and very disappointed, and wanted me to fulfill my dreams. They felt that the best option for me would be to have an abortion or give my baby up for adoption. I was 100% sure that I wanted my baby! Jeff and I talked rarely, until we finally made the decision that this is what we both wanted in our lives. I told him that I either wanted him to be completely in my life and the baby's or not at all. He made a commitment to be a devoted father, and I welcomed him back into my life with loving arms. At 18 weeks along, we found that we were expecting a little boy. Just what I had wanted! Jeff and I decided on the name Trent, and enrolled in Lamaze classes.

Trent will be a year old tomorrow and Jeff and I have been engaged since Christmas Day 2002. Initially, I felt that my life was completely over, but I am so blessed to have Trent in my life… his little toothy smiles and to watch him play! I don't know how I could have gone on in my life without him. While being a mom has proved to be a very difficult task, I wouldn't have suffered any of the alternatives. I am now a full-time student in college and receive help from both my parents and Jeff’s parents for Trent's care when I'm away. Everything has worked out so well! I just know that later on in life, I would love to have more children. I look forward to being better prepared the next time! However, the best things in life are often times unexpected....
