I started crying when I first found out, because it was just scary. You know, I mean I was only … I just turned sixteen years old. My birthday was December six and then I just found out in January that I was pregnant, and I think it was just overwhelming. Very overwhelming. Like, I thought like “How can this be? How can it happen to me?”

The scariest thing for me was telling my father and that was because I’m the baby of the family and he would always, you know, baby me and always say to my boyfriend when he’d come over “If you touch my daughter I’ll kill you!” I was afraid he would do something to my boyfriend or he’d just be discouraged and, just really feel betrayed and everything.

When I first found out, I like stayed at my sister Tonia’s house, who she’s helped me out a lot, and I wouldn’t go home because I was just so embarrassed and, just I felt like I had, you know, dishonored him. And so, I wouldn’t go home and then finally I had my sister, Tonia, go over there and tell him about it. And he just called me and he was like, “Are you ok?” You know, he was very supportive about it.

If you’re really scared of telling your parents and you don’t think you can tell them, I think that you should tell somebody that you’re close to. Like, either it’s a sister, an aunt, somebody that you’ve, like, hung out with and everything and ask them to either go, you know, do it for you, or tell them for you, or go with you.

And just, you know, what their reaction to it, take their reaction because they’re just going to be hurt and really afraid for you, that’s the most part. But, I think they’ll be positive towards it and very supporting. My mother started coming round to the fact I was pregnant just when I made it clear that I wasn’t having an abortion. Like when I went to my mother, when I told her because I thought if I tell my mom, she’ll help me tell my Dad, when I went over to my mom she was just … she didn’t want me to think that this is my only option. So, she’s like, just, “Don’t tell anybody until we figure out what we’re going to do.”

She’s like “They … we can … there’s … we can have an abortion,” she said like that. She’s just like, “Don’t tell anybody,” and I never thought that was an option. But now she’s come around, she’s more supportive and everything. She’s making baby booties and everything. It was never a doubt in my mind that I was keeping the baby, like I always thought I was keeping the baby because I’ve been against abortion, like, since I was little. Like, I’ve done, research on it; everything like that for school papers and everything. If you’re going to have an abortion, or if that’s what you’ve said, just look up on it.

There’s tapes. There’s videos. There’s pictures. And see what it actually does to the baby. I think that, then, I think they’ll change their mind, like seeing that, because I’ve seen some stuff that would make you cry and stuff like that because it’s just so sad.
