I was a 17-year-old senior, when I learned about my pregnancy. The first thing my mother and boyfriend suggested, as soon as they learned of my pregnancy, was abortion. My mother went so far as to set the appointment up for the following Tuesday. Yes, I was terrified, but the thought of having an abortion was just out of the question!!! When I told my mother and boyfriend they finally accepted my decision. And from then on, I started planning for the birth of my child.

When I was 20 weeks pregnant, I found out news that would change me for the rest of my life. During the ultrasound the doctor found a pocket of fluid on the back of my baby's head. The next day I was in the office of a specialist, who suggested that I terminate my pregnancy, because he thought there was no hope for the baby that grew inside of me. Still, I refused. I was then referred to another specialist who told me that my baby, if born would be blind, deaf, and would die within the first week of life. I had asked him if there was any hope that my baby would be okay. He told me the chances were like the odds of winning the lottery. There is a small chance, but more likely, you wouldn’t win.

I cried daily, and prayed daily. I told God that I could live with the fact that my baby wouldn’t be perfect, but just let him live. Well, that prayer was answered the day of my son Blake’s, birth. Though born early, he was a fighter. Two surgeries and 4 years of therapy later, for his mild case of cerebral palsy, he is a healthy 4-year-old, who walks, and has excellent eyesight and hearing. And he is the biggest blessing in my life, and his very involved father's. (His father and I are no longer together.)

By saying no to abortion, and putting my decision in God's hands, I can say I have won the lottery.
